Summer, 2o11

Who’s Your Baghdaddy, or How I Started the Iraq War played 23 sold-out performances and *Best Show* at the 2011 DC Fringe Festival. Unlike other Fringe shows, we were happily ensconsed in the 90 seat black box theater at Woolly Mammoth Theater Co. Written by Marshall Pailet (who also directed) and AD Penedo, the ensemble cast featured these incredible DC based performers: Harry Winter, Matthew Meyers, Meredith Richard, Emily Levey, Cyle Durkee, Mikey Cafferelli, John Dellaporta, and Paul Scanlan. The show continues its journey on Thursday, February 9, with a reading at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater in NYC at 9:30 pm.

Baghdaddy was just named one of MD Theater Scenes “must see” shows of 2011. Matthew Myers was honored with a “best performance” nod for his spectacular work as “Nelson”.

Summer 2011

F#@king Up Everything by David Eric Davis and Sam Forman, enjoyed it’s first ever production in the summer of 2011, following it’s world premiere at NYMF in 2009, when it won several prestigious awards for book and ensemble. The DC production was directed by Jay D. Brock, and co-produced with NY-based Jeremy Handleman, who is hoping to bring it to an off-Broadway venue in early 2012.

The DC cast featured local actors Augie Praley, Dani Stoller, John Fritz, Crystal Moser, Alex Aucion, and Jason Wilson. Crystal Arnette was imported from NYC for the show stopping role of legendary indie rock promoter, Ariel.

Broadway World DC nominated Jason Wilson and Crystal Moser Anderson for their performances. Crystal’s performance as “Julianna” was also recognized as one of the best of the year by MD Theater Guide.

City Paper Swoons for Claudio!

A fully imagined, well-realized piece of work about love, death and stomping on fungi. Even if you’ve never exploited the Minus World Glitch yourself, there’s something here for you. Why? Because the script is smart, the songs are strong, but this particular staging is even smarter, and stronger. CLICK HERE TO READ THE WHOLE REVIEW.

Dizzy Miss Lizzy’s Roadside Revue presents Finn McCool

The New Musical Foundation was proud to present the a world premiere of the third original musical from DC’s prolific, newly venerated kings (and queen) of concept rock, Deb Buonaccorsi and Steve McWilliams.

Zidney’s Hollywoodland

(Formerly “The Wonderful World of Zidney”)

Mike Pettry & Shawn Northrip

by Mike Pettry and Shawn Northrip

We had a fantastic cast, led by returning actors Bobby Smith (reprising his role of evil Ike Meisner), Toni Rae Brotons (the loyal and long suffering Cristine Meisner), Michael Grew (deliciously snaky as teen star Jimmy Johnson), John Dow (Ray Zidney), and Jennie Lutz in her hilarious ensemble roles. Newcomers Jason Lott, Claire Karpen Pettry (a Julliard grad student… what a talent!), and local actress Any Kellet, a revelation in a supporting role of Patti.

This was an unpublicized developmental reading. Director Shirley Serotsky and I are meeting with Shawn next week. More to come fom DC most productive – and funniest – playwright Shawn Northrip, whose new “Horrors of Online Dating” is one of the hits of the 2010 DC Fringe.

There were two other readings of Zidney, in 2007 at the Kennedy Center’s Page-to-Stage DC reading festival, and at Metrostage in December, 2007. Still hoping something good will happen with this show. Shawn is very  persistent, and everyone sees the potential of this show.

Dizzy Miss Lizzie’s Roadside Revue, The Orestia

Poster Orestia Dizzy

If the ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus had gone on tour with Led Zeppelin, Woody Guthrie and a carnie troup, this is what he would have written.

A tale of blood, guts and vengeance, this is Aeschylus’ Oresteia, re-charged. Rowdy, raucous, loud and literate: Dizzy Miss Lizzie’s Roadside Revue presents The Oresteia.
